Pulp Painting, Stenciling, and Inclusions

This workshop will explore using pulp as an image-making medium on freshly pulled sheets of handmade paper. Participants will be introduced to techniques such as pulp painting, stenciling, and inclusions.

Finely Beaten pulp is pigmented, and when mixed with methyl cellulose, creates a smooth paste similar to paint and can be used with brushes, squeeze bottles, or small hand tools. To add further imagery, participants will be asked to bring their own stencils to the workshop. We recommend that these be hand-cut from acetate sheets. Elements such as photos, hair, leaves, and newspaper clippings can be embedded into newly made sheets of paper using methyl cellulose as an adhesive.
