Lime

Technically known as calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2, lime is an alkaline substance used in the processing of papermaking fibers instead of soda ash or lye. Historically it has been used throughout Asia and Europe and still remains important in many cultures. Lime is used in both retting and cooking of fibers. Some of the leading hand papermakers today are finding this to be the material of choice in fiber processing.
